Solution:
(a) (-9) × 5 × 3 = ×(9 × 5) × 3 = 15 × 3 =-135

(b) 3 × (-17) × (-2) = -(3 × n) x (-2) = -51 × (-2)
= +(51 × 2)
= +102 or 102
(c) (-13) × (-14)× (-1) = + (13 × 14) × (-1)
= +182 × (-1) =-182
(d) 16 ×23 × 15 = 16 × 345 = 5520
(e) (-25) × (-4) × (-3) × 5= +(25 × 4) × (-3) x 5
= 100 × (-3) × 5 = -(100 x 3) × 5 = -1500
(f) (-20) × (-4) × (-5) x 8
= – (20 × 4 × 5 × 8)
= -(3200) = -3200
Question 2.
A milk container holds 1,250 litres of milk. Due to a small leak, the amount of milk decreases at the rate of 5 litres per hour. How much milk will remain in the container after 15 hours?
Solution:
Total quantity of milk in the container = 1,250 litres.
Since the container is leaking, the quantity of milk decreases at the rate of 5 litres per hour.
Therefore, the quantity of milk leaked in 15 hours = 15 × 5 = 75 litres.
Thus, the quantity of milk left in the container after 15 hours = 1,250 – 75 = 1,175 litres.

Solution:
We know that
- The product of an even number of negative numbers is positive.

In a quiz, (+5) marks are awarded for every correct answer and (-1) mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
(a) Ananya answered all questions. She got 12 correct answers and scored 50 marks. How many answers were incorrect?
(b) Vihaan got 8 correct answers. His score was 29 marks. How many questions did he attempt in total?
Solution:
(a) Total score = (Marks for correct answers) – (Marks deducted for incorrect answers)
12 x 5 – 1 x Incorrect answers = 50
60 – 1 x Incorrect answers = 50
Incorrect answers = 10
(b) Total score = 8×5-1 x Incorrect answers = 29
40 – Incorrect answers = 29
Incorrect answers = 11
Total number of questions attempted = Correct + Incorrect = 8 + 11 = 19

Simplify the following expressions:
(a) 20-(25-10 = 2)
(b)(-6)-(-18) + (-3) + (-5)×4
Solution:
(a) 20-(25- 10 – 2) = 20 – (25 – 5) = 20 – 20 = 0
(b) (-6) – (-18 = -3) + (-5 x 4) = (-6) – (6) + (-20)
= -6 – 6 – 20 = -32
Question 6.
A few labourers were given a contract to dig a well. On the first day, they dug to a depth of 15 metres. From the second day onwards, they dug 10 metres deep every day. What is the depth of the well at the end of 5 days?
Solution:
The depth of well is considered as a negative integer because they are digging downwards.
The depth on each day can be expressed as follows:
Day 1: -15 m; Day 2: -10 m; Day 3: -10 m; Day 4: -10 m; Day 5: -10 m
At the end of 5 days, the depth of the well is:
-15 m + 4 x (-10 m) = -55 metres, meaning they have dug 55 metres in total.

The temperature gauge at a weather station shows a temperature at +20°C at 6 a.m. The temperature decrease at a constant rate of 2°C per hour. At what time will the temperature reach -10°C?
Solution:
Initial temperature at 6 a.m. is 20°C.
Temperature decreases by 2°C per hour.
We need to find when the temperature will reach -10°C
Total decrease in temperature = 20 – (-10) = 30°C
Time taken to decrease by 30°C = \(\frac{30}{2}\) =15 hours
Starting from 6 a.m, the temperature will take 15 hours to reach -10°C.
6 a.m. + 15 hours = 9 p.m.
Thus, the temperature will reach -10°C at 9 p.m.

Observe the pattern when multiplying 4 with integers from 3 to -3.
Solution:
4 × 3=12 ; 4 × 2=8 ; 4 × 1=4 ; 4 × 0=0; 4 ×(-1)=-4 ; 4 ×(-2)=-8 ; 4 ×(-3)=-12.

(a) From sea level: 20 ×(-4)=-80
Position =-80m(80m below sea level)
(b) From 10 m above sea level:
10+(15 ×-4)=10-60=-50
Position =-50m (50 m below sea level).
