Question 1.
Read the following passage carefully. (10)
(1) A whopping 95% of the fires raging in California are started by humans, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. All it takes is just one spark to kick off a wildfire that spreads over entire forests and multiple states. This means that all humans-no matter what age-can examine how they contribute to wildfires to advance their prevention.
The following list explains how human activity and equipment can spark wildfires.
(2) Vehicles and tools scraping hard surfaces Anything that can cause a spark and has the potential to spread outdoors, especially in ideal fire weather and create a wildfire. In 2018, two massive California wildfires began with sparks caused by a stake hitting the ground in 100-degree weather and a flat tire rim scraping against the road. Some other common causes of wildfires are vehicle collisions, metal mower or weed-whacking blades striking rocks and chains hanging off trucks that scrape pavement.
(3) Power lines and other electrical equipment Power lines often break in strong winds and sparks spread dangerously fast with faster winds and dry vegetation. Outlets and appliances can also spark or overheat and cause electrical fires that escalate.
(4) Debris burning Fires lit for agricultural purposes like clearing land or removing crop residue make up 29% of wildfires nationally. Campfires, especially illegal, unattended or poorly extinguished ones, have the potential to bum thousands of acres. And if the fire warning is high, that really spells trouble.
(5) Arson People sometimes intentionally bum property or nature. Cigarettes and fireworks People should be mindful to practice safe use and disposal of both cigarette butts and fireworks, as even small heat sources can ignite dry vegetation and lead to hdge wildfires.
(6) Fires that rage out of control have many devastating effects on human, animal and plant life. Smoke from large fires negatively affects air quality and can damage the lungs of people thousands of miles away. Wildfire also threatens water quality, destroys animal habitat and leaves behind stripped land that can easily become eroded and create mudslides.
(7) Wildfires also bum up the carbon stored in trees and soil, releasing large amounts of smoke, methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which increase overall temperatures. Forests eventually recover from wildfires, but it can take a long time.
(8) The U.S. Forest Service, state agencies, private companies and individuals who own forestland all help to minimise the likelihood and severity of wildfires with prescribed burning, monitoring natural fires and removing or trimming unwanted vegetation. Regular, smaller prescribed bums clear a lot of underbrush that a wildfire could otherwise use as fuel and potentially result in the wildfire becoming too large to manage.
(9) Forest industry organisations and the forest service managing large tracts of forestland employ firefighters on the ground and aerial firefighting crafts to manage both prescribed fires and wildfires. These brave responders step in to the fight more than 73,000 wildfires that bum an average of seven million acres every year across the U.S.
Answer the following questions based on the above passage.
(i) Why is it said in paragraph 1 that ‘all humans-no matter what age can examine how they contribute to wildfires’?(1)
Answer:
It is said so because wildfires are mainly human-caused; everyone, regardless of age, has a role in preventing them by being aware of their actions and minimising risk, such as avoiding sparks from tools or improperly extinguished fires.
(ii) According to paragraphs 2 and 3, wildfires can be triggered by all of the following EXCEPT (1)
(a) Mower blades hitting stones
(b) Chains scraping against die road
(c) Rainwater leaking onto dry leaves
(d) Power lines snapping in strong winds
Answer:
(c) Rainwater leaking onto dry leaves

Answer:
poorly managed.
(iv) Select the option that is True from (A)-(C) for what the phrase ‘small heat sources can ignite dry vegetation’ suggests in paragraph 5. (1)
(A) Even minor sparks can lead to major wildfires under dry conditions.
(B) Only intense heat from electrical equipment causes wildfires.
(C) Cigarettes and fireworks rarely affect vegetation during dry weather.
Answer:
(a) Even minor sparks can lead to major wildfires under dry conditions.
(v) Prescribed burning : controlled prevention :: _______: _______ (Paragraph 8) (1)
Complete the analogy by selecting one of the two correct options (a), (b).
(a) wildfires: accidental destruction

Answer:
(a) wildfires: accidental destruction
(vi) Why are wildfires dangerous for people and the environment? (Paragraphs 6 and 7)
(Answer in 30-40 words) (2)
Answer:
Wildfires damage lungs through smoke, threaten water quality, destroy habitats and cause soil erosion and mudslides. They also release carbon, methane and C02, contributing to rising global temperatures and harming both people and ecosystems.
(vii) What are the main ideas of paragraph 8 and paragraph 9? (1)
I. Prescribed bums help reduce wildfire risks.
II. Forests always recover quickly from fires.
III. Firefighters and aircraft are used to fight wildfires.
IV. Burning forests releases less carbon into the air. <
Answer:
(a) I, II
(viii) Why is it important for both private and public sectors to be involved in wildfire prevention and management? Answer in 30-40 words. (Paragraphs 8 and 9) (2)
Answer:
It is important for both private and public sectors to be involved because wildfires are widespread and severe; both public agencies and private forest owners must work together through monitoring, prescribed burning and emergency response. Collaboration ensures better prevention, resource use and faster wildfire management.
Question 2.
Read the following passage carefully.
(1) Ask a dying man in a hot desert, and he would somehow enable himself to utter, “I wish I could get some water….” Without being poetic or philosophic, we must realise that ‘water’, which is generally taken for granted, might be the most precious commodity in future if we do not mend our ways in the present. There can’t be a safe tomorrow if we are not ready to act today.
It becomes one of our prime responsibilities to save our precious water supplies. Out of the total water available on the Earth, only 3 percent is freshwater. Out of this 3% freshwater, only 1% is available for drinking. In our daily chores, we might have observed that we ourselves forget to turn off the tap early in the morning when we go to freshen ourselves up. We, at the moment, do not realise that our carelessness might be one.of the reasons for the water crisis for the future generation. “Many a drop makes an ocean.” Our small efforts can contribute to the conservation of the water in one or the other way. Each one of us has the ability to make a difference.
(2) The groundwater supply is reducing over time. Due to lack of suitable irrigation water, or the mismanagement of water in India, farmers over-extract water which is thought to be one of the shocking facts that affects the health of the cultivable agricultural lands. It is essential to adopt several water conservation techniques. It is necessary to launch several intensive awareness campaigns regarding the importance of water and its conservation so that these can make people aware about the wise management of water supply. The unwise use of water is not the only reason for the water crisis; the pollution of water resources is also an important reason for the deterioration of water supplies. So, water should be meticulously harnessed and carefully conserved.
(3) Installation of a water meter can help you save water. Growing grass appropriately outside your house or having a lawn can be helpful. Keeping your water supplying taps and showers tightly closed and repairing water leakage can contribute to the conservation of water. Collect water for reuse anytime you are running the water. Simply run it into a bucket, watering cane or pitcher.
(4) Several plans, policies and promises are made by the government, several announcements are made on the electronic media but the problem is still the same because we do not make sincere efforts.
Answer the following questions based on the above passage.

(A) You recently witnessed the T20 World Cup India-South Africa cricket match that was played in the city of Barbados, U.S.A. It was a nail-biting match. Describe it in 100-120 words.
Answer:
World Cup matches make the Indian public ecstatic. Watching a match offers a twb-fold thrill-one is experiencing the game and the other is witnessing the public go wild. I had the chance to see the T20 World Cup Final Match between India and South Africa live in Barbados, U.S.A. I had flown specially from Mumbai to attend the match.
The stadium was packed to capacity-there wasn’t an inch of space. Every ball bowled by the Indian bowlers and each run scored by the Indians made people cheer, scream, applaud and wave the Indian flag. India gave South Africa a target of 177 runs after the first innings.
During the second innings, South Africa had an explosive over, scoring nearly 24 runs! We thought all was lost. But suddenly, the game shifted and India won by 7 runs! The entire stadium erupted in joy. You could see the celebration on every Indian’s face. I was so happy to be part of such a historic moment.
(B) Write a descriptive paragraph about your experience of reaching late for an examination.
Answer:
Once, when I was in 7th Standard, I was preparing for my final session-end exams. I slept late, as I was doing last-minute revision of my syllabus. As a result, I woke up ten minutes later than planned. I got ready as quickly as I could and rushed out to catch my school bus, but as I had feared, I had missed it.
I took an e-rickshaw instead and told the driver to go as fast as possible. He tried to speed up when suddenly, a small schoolgirl trying to cross the road came in front of us. The driver slammed the brakes and the e-rickshaw skidded. We were shocked but relieved to see that the girl was unhurt.
I then told the driver to go slow as I was feeling shaken. I reached the exam hall late and explained the incident to the invigilator. My exam went well, but I realised that next time I need to manage my study time better to avoid such situations in the future.

- her dog pounced – I ran for life
- female’s sudden disappearance
- very frightened
- car started on its own – drove back
Answer:
I was returning home in my car when it suddenly broke down. It was around midnight. I stepped out and looked helplessly around for any sign of life. After a while, I saw a woman walking a dog.
Gathering courage, I approached her and asked if there was a service station or mechanic nearby. The lady stared at me silently and then let her dog loose. The dog lunged at me. Terrified, I ran as fast as I could. I was running so frantically that I tripped over a stone and fell.
Horrified, I looked back at the road. There was no sign of the woman or her dog. My blood ran cold.
Cautiously, I got up, walked back to my car, sat down and tried starting the engine. To my relief, the engine started. I focused on the road and drove away as fast as I could.
(B) Your friend behaved very selfishly in the canteen today and you are very upset. Write a diary entry expressing your feelings. You are Jared/Jennifer.
Answer:
Saturday, 25th August, 20XX
10:00 p.m.
Dear Diary
Today was one of the worst days of my life. My best friend publicly humiliated me. We met in the canteen during lunch break and I thought we would be catching up on our week. But to my disappointment, she had something else in mind.
She had heard a rumour that I had complained to the teacher about her carrying a mobile phone to school.
I was stunned by her accusation and tried to explain that I would never do such a thing, but she wouldn’t listen. She kept yelling at me. What hurt me most was when she called me a ‘backstabber’ and stormed out of the canteen.
I was so upset I couldn’t even finish my lunch. When school ended, I rushed home in tears.
I don’t know what to do. Hopefully, we’ll clear up this misunderstanding soon.
Jared

Question 10.
Answer any one of the following two questions in 100-120 words each. (6)
(i) Give a brief analysis of the poem ‘A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal’ in your own words.
Answer:
The poet of ‘A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal’ confesses his love and sorrow over an enigmatic and idealised woman in this poem. The poet is shown to be struck by the strangeness of his beloved’s passing since he always imagined her as young and vibrant. He finds it difficult to comprehend that her body is now as inert as the ‘rocks and stones and tree’. He claims that the loss of his beloved left him feeling extremely unhappy. He claims that his beloved has changed into a thing that is no longer alive and cannot be touched by anything on Earth.
He also believes that his beloved is now motionless as she can neither hear nor see. She is imprisoned beneath the ground and rotates around trees, rocks and other objects. The poem serves as a reminder to readers that despite death’s certainty, the majority of people live deeply delusional lives, seldom recognising their mortality.
(ii) The best way to deal with a crisis is not to lose your calm. Discuss with reference to the play
‘If I Were You’. What trait of Gerrard helped him to come out of that difficult situation?
Answer:
The play ‘If I Were You’ clearly shows how Gerrard saved his own life. He also helped the police to catch a dreaded criminal. It was all due to his calm nature as any other ordinary man might have become completely nervous and scared in such a situation. But Gerrard kept his presence of mind and behaved as if nothing unusual had happened. His confidence impressed the criminal and made him believe Gerrard when he made up a story that he himself was a murderer. This made the criminal rethink his plan of impersonating Gerrard after killing him. Gerrard kept him distracted until he was able to think of a method to trap the intruder. He courageously knocked the revolver from the criminal’s hand. Thus, his confidence and composed temperament, as well as his courage, helped him to get out of the difficult situation.

She believed she would die when the last leaf on the ivy creeper fell. Despite Sue’s efforts to encourage her, Johnsy remained hopeless. When Sue had to paint an old miner for a project, she asked Behrman, their sixty-year-old neighbour, to model. Sue also shared Johnsy’s condition with him. Understanding the situation, Behrman stepped out on a stormy night and painted a realistic leaf on the wall after the last real leaf had fallen. This painted leaf gave Johnsy hope. She changed her attitude and started recovering. Sadly, Behrman died of pneumonia, but his sacrifice saved Johnsy.
