Reading Skills (20 Marks)
Question 1.
Read the following passage carefully. (10)
(1) In December 2022, ChatGPT was released, revolutionising the way we seek, process and record information. While its impact was immediate, ChatGPT is the product of a longer history involving chatbots or computer programs capable of simulating human conversation. Such chatbots use Large Language Models (LLMs), which collect massive amounts of data from sources like Wikipedia, online forums and educational websites. This data enables LLMs to generate responses that feel informed and relevant.
(2) The ‘GPT’ in ChatGPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. This technology enables ChatGPT to predict entire paragraphs rather than just words, making its responses more coherent. However, these programs can make factual errors as they do not always verify information. While ChatGPT is a specific AI program, many new AI tools are emerging rapidly.
(3) ChatGPT and similar tools yield both positive and negative effects. Some academics believe these technologies pose challenges to learning, offering shortcuts that may erode students’ abilities for independent thought and critical analysis. Others, however, highlight their usefulness for idea generation, overcoming writer’s block and producing drafts-an acknowledgement that AI has become part of daily life. Crucially, academia cannot afford to ignore these developments.
(4) The rise of ChatGPT continues a trajectory begun by word processors, spell checkers and predictive text-though there is a difference. Predictive text is a form of machine learning and typically serves limited functions, while general AI tools like ChatGPT perform a far broader range of tasks, from creating essays to answering questions. The crucial issue, however, is the quality of inputs: ‘Garbage in, garbage out.’ For example, a paper written by ChatGPT was submitted as an experiment-peer reviewers initially believed it was human-written but errors emerged when its origin was revealed. Another study found ChatGPT-created scientific abstracts bypassed peer review 32% of the time, even when reviewers were warned about possible fakes.
(5) Unlike simple spelling or grammar checkers, ChatGPT generates complete texts, which complicates proofing and detection. One study showed ChatGPT fooled scientists nearly one-third of the time. Tools like the GPT-2 Output Detector and Tumitin have since added Al-detection features.
(6) AI is increasingly applied beyond academia, such as in medicine, where it offers both benefits and concerns. In one study, ChatGPT contributed new diagnostic perspectives in 60 medical cases; 85% cited benefits, though 96% also expressed worries.
(7) The conversation about Al-written content in academia is just beginning. Experts suggest educators should adapt, teaching students both the productive use of these tools and ethical considerations, especially regarding plagiarism-a vital preparation for the Al-powered future.
Answer the following questions based on the above passage.
(i) Why is the release of ChatGPT in December 2022 described as a revolution? (Paragraph 1) (1)
Answer:
It is described as a revolution because it dramatically changed how we find, interact and record information, transforming practices that had developed over years of chatbot evolution.

(vi) Why does the passage mention that peer reviewers were initially fooled by a paper written by ChatGPT? (2)
Answer:
The passage mentions that to illustrate how Al-generated content can closely mimic human writing and pass expert scrutiny, though errors may become evident later.
(vii) What are the main ideas of paragraph 3 and paragraph 6? (1)
I. AI tools present challenges and opportunities in education.
II. Al-generated writing is easily detectable.
III. ChatGPT outputs can mislead even experts.
IV. The usefulness of AI tools is limited to grammar checking.

(viii) Why is it important for educators to integrate AI tools thoughtfully into teaching, according to the passage? (2)
Answer:
It is important because doing so helps students leam how to use AI productively and ethically, especially to address concerns like plagiarism, preparing them for a future where AI is widespread.
Question 2.
Read the following passage carefully. (10)
(1) In mid 2021, as the world emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic, prices started rising in multiple countries. Inflation reached levels not seen for decades in several advanced economies. In the U.S. for example, year-over-year inflation breached the 5% threshold in May 2021 and stayed above that level for more than a year, peaking at over 9% in June 2022. U.S. inflation has exceeded 5% only twice since November 1982, once for a few months in 1990-1991 and for a second time briefly in mid 2008.
(2) There were several reasons for this worldwide inflationary surge, including supply chain disruptions, pent-up demand being released as many countries went back to pre-pandemic modes of life, sharp increases in food and energy prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and corporate profiteering. In addition, large fiscal stimuli provided by governments boosted demand further.
(3) There has been much discussion about the nature of this bout of inflation among academics, policymakers and analysts in the U.S. Tire debate is between those who think this inflation is transitory and others who believe that it is persistent. This naturally leads them to advocate for different policies. Those who fear persistent inflation have claimed that post-pandemic stimulus packages were too large and that the Federal Reserve should raise interest rates to tame inflation, even at the risk of triggering a recession.
(4) The steady disinflation seen globally during 2023 seems to be settling the debate in favour of the interpretation that the surge was transitory. U.S. inflation in November 2023 was at 3.1%.
The patterns in inflation in the West are quite different from those in Asia, as seen in the figure below. Inflation was muted in China, fluctuated around the 6% level in India, increased for a few months in 2022 and then subsided in Korea and Indonesia. This suggests that the underlying factors at work in the West and in the rest of the world may be quite different.

Answer:
the inflation was lower and more stable, suggesting different regional economic dynamics.
(viii) How does the chart visually support the information in the final paragraph of the passage? (2)

I once had a very terrifying experience while I was travelling by train to visit my relatives. At night, we were ambushed by robbers. Three masked men with guns entered our compartment and shouted at us to hand over our cash and valuables. One woman in the berth above mine screamed out of fear. One of the dacoits moved towards us and pointed his gun at her. He threatened her to keep quiet. He then asked me to come down and sit on the lower berth. After that, he started searching everyone in the compartment for valuables.
As soon as his back was turned, I used my taekwondo skills and swiftly hit him with a karate chop on his neck. He instantly became unconscious and fell down. I grabbed his gun and held it to his forehead, shouting at the other two to surrender or I would shoot their companion.
The two dacoits were shocked but followed my instructions. They put down their guns and raised their hands. Some of my fellow passengers quickly jumped into action and helped me tie up the robbers. (ii) “The only woman in the world who has scaled Mt. Everest twice was bom in a society where the birth of a son was regarded as a blessing and a daughter, though not considered a curse, was not generally welcome.”
Based on the above lines, what qualities in Santosh Yadav helped her get into the record books both times she conquered Mt. Everest? What can one leam from her?
Answer:
(i) The story ‘The Snake and the Mirror’ is a serious incident narrated with humour through clever contrasts.
The doctor, full of pride in his looks and profession, suddenly feels weak and helpless when faced with a snake, creating an ironic contrast. His humorous desire to marry a fat, rich lady who couldn’t chase him is contradicted by the reality of marrying a thin, agile woman. The doctor’s ability to laugh at himself, such as when a thief leaves behind his dirty vest out of ‘cleanliness’, adds further humour. His witty imagination about the snake pondering over beauty choices like growing a mustache or applying makeup adds charm.
The doctor’s self-deprecating and light-hearted tone makes a potentially terrifying event enjoyable and amusing.
(ii) Santosh Yadav was born in an orthodox environment in Haryana where a girl child was not welcomed. From her early childhood, she showed the qualities of a rebel. She went to pursue her higher studies out of her village despite her parents’ unwillingness, as they wanted her to get married at the age of sixteen. She also enrolled to pursue mountaineering which requires a lot of hard work, dedication and determination.
Hard-working with an iron strong will power, Santosh showed qualities in her training like physical endurance, mental toughness and resistance to cold at high altitude. These qualities helped her to scale Mt. Everest twice and get her name into the world record books. She is a massive inspiration for all of us and a wonderful role model for young girls.
Her life shows us that nothing is impossible if one is passionate and determined about one’s goal. We all can learn to be mentally tough, determined, dedicated and kind from her.
‘A’ Value Points
■ She resisted social pressure with courage.
■ Her focus and mental toughness led to success.
■ Teaches persistence, bravery and goal commitment
Question 11.
Answer any one of the following two questions in 100-120 words each. (6)
(i) “The statue of the Happy Prince and the name given to him is also ironic.” Elaborate all the ironies in the lesson ‘The Happy Prince’.
(ii) Sometimes wisdom lies in being tactful. It was the guru’s wisdom and knowledge that led them to him to become the King of the Kingdom. Elaborate with reference to ‘In the Kingdoms of Fools’.
Answer:
(i) The lesson ‘The Happy Prince’ is filled with irony. The title itself is ironic; the statue appears happy but is full of sorrow over the suffering of the poor. The Prince, once joyful in life, now weeps at the misery he sees. Another irony lies in the seamstress’s life: though she embroiders a rich gown for the Queen’s maid, her own life is full of hardship and her son is sick and starving. Lastly, even when the statue is melted, the leaden heart does not melt, symbolising true compassion. Ironically, it is this lifeless statue that feels for others, unlike real people. Through these ironies, the story highlights that selfless deeds, not wealth or beauty, lead to true happiness.
(ii) It is often said that wise people are sincere and believe in being honest and truthful. But there are circumstances when even the wise people may also tell a lie for a positive end. In the story ‘In the Kingdom of Fools’, the wise man, guru realises that the place he was at, along with his disciple, was the kingdom of fools. Upon the realisation, he decided to leave the place as he knew nothing good would happen here. However, he later returned to save his disciple and lied to the King for the same.
He recognised the greed of the idiot King and his minister. So, he played a tactful trick on them. As a consequence, the disciple and the people of the Kingdom were saved. Realising the wisdom and intelligence of the guru, the people of the Kingdom even requested him to become their new King. Therefore, it can be rightly said that, ‘sometimes wisdom lies in being tactful’. It was the guru’s wisdom and intelligence that led him to become the King.
