The Clock
Soham’s mother has brought a new clock for her home. Looking at the clock, Soham asks his mother how to read the time from a clock?
Her mother tells that he can say the time by looking at the positions of hour and minute hands on the face or dial of the clock. Here, the hour hand is at 9 and the minute hand is at 12. So, the time is 9 o’clock or 9:00.
Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar Class 4 Worksheet with Answers Maths Chapter 12 19

Question 10.
Read and write the time shown on. clocks In two ways. One Is done for you.
Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar Class 4 Worksheet with Answers Maths Chapter 12 20
Answer:
(b) 05:00, 5 o’clock
(c) 01:00, 1 o’clock
(d) 10:00, 10 o’clock

How many hours In a day?
Mother tells him that the dial of the clock is divided into 12 big divisions, numbered from 1 to 12. The gap between every pair of consecutive numbers is divided into 5 equal small divisions. There are 60 small divisions on the whole dial. Each small division represents a minute.
The minute hand (longer hand) moves from one small division to the next small division in 1 minute. It goes once around the dial in 1 hour. So, the minute hand covers- 60 small divisions in 1 hour.
So, 1 hour = 60 minutes
The hour hand moves from one number to the next number in 1 hour.
So, it takes 12 hours to complete one round. The hour hand takes 2 complete rounds a day. So, 1 day = 24 hours

Project

12-hour and 24-hour Clocks
Soham usually has breakfast at 7 o’clock in the morning and he does his self-study at 7 o’clock in the evening. How will we understand here that the clock is showing the time in the morning or evening? There are 24 hours in a day, but on the face of the clock there are only 12 numbers.
Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar Class 4 Worksheet with Answers Maths Chapter 12 22

To overcome this confusion, we use a.m. (Ante meridiem) and p.m. (Post meridiem). We generally write a.m. to refer to the time just after midnight to just before noon, and p.m. to refer to the time just after noon and before midnight.
Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar Class 4 Worksheet with Answers Maths Chapter 12 23
