Question 1.
Read the following passage carefully. (10)
1. India, with its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes and vibrant communities, has emerged as a prominent destination for tourists seeking immersive experiences and authentic encounters. However, the rapid growth of tourism has raised concerns about its environmental, social and cultural impacts, prompting a shift towards sustainable tourism practices.
2. Sustainable tourism in India is characterised by initiatives that minimise negative impacts on the environment, preserve cultural heritage and promote social inclusion and economic empowerment. This entails adopting responsible practices such as eco-friendly infrastructure development, waste management and biodiversity conservation. For instance, ecotourism initiatives in regions like the Western Ghats and the Himalayas emphasise low-impact tourism activities that showcase the natural beauty of these ecosystems while preserving their ecological integrity.
3. Moreover, sustainable tourism in India places a strong emphasis on community engagement and empowerment, ensuring that local communities derive equitable benefits from tourism activities. Community-based tourism initiatives, such as homestays and cultural exchanges, provide opportunities for rural communities to participate in the tourism value chain, generating income and fostering cultural exchange. By involving local stakeholders in decision-making processes and capacity-building activities, sustainable tourism initiatives contribute to poverty alleviation and inclusive development.
4. Furthermore, sustainable tourism in India seeks to promote cultural heritage preservation and appreciation, recognising the intrinsic value of indigenous knowledge systems, traditional practices and historical monuments. Heritage tourism initiatives, such as heritage walks and conservation projects, aim to raise awareness about India’s rich cultural heritage and promote sustainable tourism practices that respect and celebrate local traditions.
5. However, despite its potential benefits, sustainable tourism in India faces several challenges that hinder its widespread adoption and implementation. Infrastructure gaps, inadequate waste management systems and unsustainable development practices pose significant threats to fragile ecosystems and cultural heritage sites. Moreover, issues such as overtourism, cultural commodification and displacement of indigenous communities underscore the need for a more nuanced and context-specific approach to tourism development.
6. To address these challenges, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and civil society actors must collaborate to develop and implement comprehensive strategies for sustainable tourism in India. This includes investing in eco-friendly infrastructure, promoting responsible tourism practices, and strengthening regulatory frameworks to ensure compliance with environmental and social standards. Additionally, fostering community participation and empowerment through capacity-building initiatives and equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms is essential for realising the full potential of sustainable tourism as a driver of inclusive and sustainable development.
7. In conclusion, sustainable tourism in India holds immense potential to promote economic growth, preserve natural and cultural heritage, and empower local communities. By embracing a holistic approach that integrates environmental conservation, community engagement and cultural preservation, India can leverage its tourism assets to create a more resilient and equitable tourism sector that benefits both present and future generations.

Question 2.
Read the following passage carefully.
1. A recent survey conducted among two age groups-children aged 6-8 and pre-teens aged 9-12-investigated their preferences for digital and traditional books across activities such as bedtime reading, school assignments and leisure reading. The study sought to uncover emerging reading habits and the reasons driving children’s format choices.
2. The findings highlighted noticeable trends based on age groups and reading contexts. Among children aged 6-8, 72% preferred traditional print books for bedtime reading, citing physical comfort and reduced screen time as benefits. However, 28% leaned toward digital formats, appreciating the built-in audio support and visuals. For school assignments, 64% favoured print books for their tactile appeal and ease of annotation, while 36% used e-books for quick access and search features.
3. In the 9-12 age group, the preferences shifted more towards digital formats. For leisure reading, 59% chose e-books, citing portability and customisation options like font adjustments. However, 41% continued with print books, valuing the immersive, distraction-free experience. During academic tasks, 62% still used printed material, showing trust in tangible references. For bedtime reading, however, 68% went with traditional books, likely due to parental influence and screen fatigue.
4. These insights suggest the need to balance digital innovation with traditional formats. Publishers can explore hybrid models like printed books with QR-linked digital supplements or interactive storybooks, offering both engagement and accessibility suited to varying reader preferences.

Subject The need of Educational Counsellors in schools
Sir/Ma’am
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the need of educational counsellors in our schools.
In these modem and competitive times, the tendency to outperform their fellow mates is prevalent among the youngsters. After the secondary examination, a candidate is required to make a difficult choice regarding higher studies. Students don’t receive proper guidance in choosing the stream that suits them. Also, no valid mechanism exists to assess the suitability of students. Students are pressurised by peers or parents into choosing a stream in which they don’t have any interest. They end up performing poorly in that stream and fall into depression.
The HRD ministry should take serious note of this issue and an educational counsellor should be appointed in every school in order to give guidance to students for their careers. This will certainly help students in choosing the stream of their choice.
I hope you will highlight the issue in your newspaper so that the concerned authorities take immediate action in this regard.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,

Question 5.
Attempt ANY ONE from A and B given below. (5)
You are the Secretary of the Environment Club in your school. Two environmentalists – Dr. Anil Mathur and Ms. Nisha Verma – have expressed interest in speaking at your upcoming seminar on ‘Youth and Climate Action’. Below are excerpts from their letters.
A. Excerpt 1
…I would be honoured to speak at your school’s seminar. As a climate scientist with over 15 years of field experience, I have worked with national and international agencies to study the effects of climate change. I regularly deliver guest lectures at colleges and universities and publish research papers in leading journals. My sessions aim to provide factual knowledge supported by data and scientific research to help students understand the urgency of climate issues. Warm regards |
Excerpt 2
…I am excited about the possibility of addressing young students at your seminar. With a background in community activism and environmental education, I have led various youth programmes that encourage practical climate action, such as tree plantations, waste reduction and green entrepreneurship. I strive to make climate issues relatable and offer students everyday solutions that they can implement in their schools and homes. Sincerely |
Analyse the information in a paragraph, justifying which guest speaker would be a better choice for your seminar. Consider factors such as expertise, ability to engage young audiences and relevance to the theme.
Answer:
Both Dr. Anil Mathur and Ms. Nisha Verma bring valuable perspectives to the seminar on ‘Youth and Climate Action’. However, Ms. Nisha Verma appears to be a more suitable choice as a guest speaker for a school audience. While Dr. Mathur has impressive scientific credentials and experience in climate research, his focus seems more academic and data-driven. In contrast, Ms. Verma has hands-on experience with youth-focused environmental programs and emphasises practical, relatable actions. Her background in community activism and environmental education aligns closely with the seminar’s objective of encouraging student participation in climate action. Additionally, her ability to connect with young audiences and offer implementable solutions makes her message both inspiring and actionable for students. Therefore, Ms. Nisha Verma would likely have a more meaningful impact on the school audience.

B. Rohan, a Class X student, is known for his analytical mindset, strong research skills and calm demeanour. However, he lacks confidence in public speaking and often hesitates to take the lead in group settings. He has been shortlisted to represent the school in an inter-school science symposium and needs to select a co-presenter from Ananya, Kabir and Isha. Below are the profiles of the three candidates
Ananya Ananya is a confident and persuasive speaker who excels in debates and elocution contests. She has a basic understanding of science topics but relies heavily on others for research and content development. She enjoys working with peers and is known for her enthusiasm during stage events.
Kabir Kabir is a quiet but brilliant student with a deep understanding of science. He is thorough in his research but lacks enthusiasm for presenting in front of large crowds. He prefers working alone and finds collaboration challenging.
Isha Isha is highly organised and supportive, with moderate public speaking skills. She is good at simplifying complex topics for audiences and maintains a balanced approach to both content and presentation. She works well in teams and encourages others to perform their best.
Based on the qualities of each candidate, evaluate and decide who would be the most suitable co-presenter for Rohan. Consider aspects such as complementary abilities, stage confidence and collaborative spirit.
Answer:
While all three candidates have their own strengths, Ananya would be the most suitable co-presenter for Rohan at the science symposium. Rohan is strong in research and analysis but lacks confidence in public speaking, which is Ananya’s strength. Her ability to engage the audience and speak persuasively will complement Rohan’s content expertise. Although Ananya may not be as strong in science research, Rohan’s skills can fill that gap effectively, making them a balanced team. Additionally, Ananya enjoys teamwork and stage presence, which aligns well with the requirements of a symposium. Kabir, despite his scientific brilliance, is not comfortable in collaborative or public speaking situations and Isha, though a good team player, may not offer the strong stage confidence Rohan lacks. Therefore, Ananya’s outgoing nature and speaking ability make her the best choice to support Rohan.

His experiences turned him from a fun-loving boy into a brave freedom fighter who dedicated his life to the struggle for his country’s liberty.

B. What does the poem ‘Amanda!’ teach us about the importance of proper upbringing? Explain.
Answer:
The poem ‘Amanda!’ shows that children should be brought up with love and understanding, not constant scolding. Amanda is always being told what to do—sit straight, stop biting nails, finish homework and behave properly. Because of this, she feels unhappy and escapes into her imagination. She dreams of being a mermaid, an orphan and Rapunzel—where she can be alone and free.
This tells us that too much control can hurt a child’s mind and make them feel trapped. A good upbringing should include discipline but also allow space for children to express themselves and grow emotionally.
Parents should listen and guide gently instead of only correcting.
Question 11.
Answer ANY ONE of the following two questions in about 100-120 words. (1 × 6 = 6)
A. Bholi was different from other children. How did this difference make her an object of neglect and laughter?
Answer:
Bholi was different from other children because she had a speech problem and marks on her face due to smallpox. She was also considered slow in learning. Because of this, people laughed at her and made fun of her. Even her family did not treat her well. Her parents never gave her proper clothes or care. They thought she was a burden and wanted to marry her off to anyone who would accept her.
She was not loved or respected like her siblings. However, in the end, Bholi proved that she was brave and smart. She stood up for herself and refused to marry a greedy man. This shows that every child, even if different, deserves love and respect.
Or
B. What would have happened if Matilda had told her friend the truth about losing the necklace?
(The Necklace)
Answer:
If Matilda had told Mme. Forestier the truth about losing the necklace, her life would have been very different. Mme. Forestier would have revealed that the necklace was fake and not worth much. Matilda and her husband would not have spent ten years working hard to repay the debt for buying a replacement. They would not have suffered in poverty, doing all kinds of labor.
By hiding the truth, Matilda faced unnecessary hardship and lost her youth and beauty. This story teaches us that honesty is always better. Telling the truth early could have saved Matilda and her husband from years of struggle and pain.
