Read the following passage carefully.
1. The seasonal problem of water taps running dry is plaguing most of our major cities. With the bigger rivers flowing in trickles and ponds and wells reduced to clay-pits, village women in remote areas have to fetch every drop of water for drinking, cooking, washing, and so on, across large distances. This has only worsened a perennial problem, that of widespread pollution of water, rendering it unfit for human consumption. The monsoons and the attendant floods will not solve this problem. The Delhi Administration is seriously worried about the threat to civic health posed by the polluted waters of the Yamuna. More treatment plants ar.e to be set up to treat sewage. The Ganga, the Yamuna, the Kaveri, in fact, all our important rivers, serving many urban conglomerations, are fast becoming a major source of disease.

2. A comprehensive bill, introduced in Parliament recently, envisages the setting up of Central and State Boards for the prevention and control of water pollution.

3. According to a survey of eight countries conducted a couple of years ago, 90% of all child deaths were due to water-borne diseases.

4. A new threat that has already assumed alarming proportions is from industrial waste, which is generally dumped, untreated, into the nearest river. For instance, for every kilogram of processed hide, 30-40 litres of foul-smelling wastewater have to be disposed of. There are at least 900 licensed tanneries in the organised sector.

5. Putrefied paper and jute waste, metallic waste from straw board and textile mills, sulphur, ammonia, urea, metallic salts, corrosive acids—all find their way to the rivers of India.

6. It is important not only to make new laws to ensure the purity of water, but also to realise the urgency of implementing them ruthlessly, if we are to avoid a national health disaster cutting across the barrier between towns and the countryside.

7. Public awareness and community participation are crucial in tackling the water crisis. Schools, local bodies and NGOs must come together to educate citizens about the importance of conserving water and preventing pollution. Rainwater harvesting, reusing greywater, and adopting environment-friendly practices in homes and industries can make a significant difference. Only a combined effort by the government and the people can ensure that future generations inherit clean and safe water resources.

The Earth is called the Blue Planet. About 97% of the Earth is made of water, and yet the scarcity of water available for use by humans is nerve-chilling. India suffers from water shortage for cultivation and drinking, even though many big rivers flow through our country.

The major causes of this scarcity are global warming, which has led to irregularities in rainfall and snowfall, and depletion of underground water resources. Further, rapid urbanisation, industrialisation, and the ever-increasing population have led to an increase in demand for everything. Even the underground water is lost due to overexploitation. And now it is estimated that, by 2020, several Indian cities like Delhi and Bengaluru will have lost their groundwater recharge completely. India is blessed with rainfall in several regions, which can be harvested to meet our needs. Schemes that promote proper town planning and water harvesting need to be launched on a bigger scale.

Eco clubs should be established in all the schools of the country to spread awareness among the students about the need to stop the reckless use of water and water. Only then can we ensure a safe future for our coming generations; otherwise, the day is not far when we may witness another world war, not for land but for water.

(ii) How did the narrator find out about Sebastian Shultz’s condition, and how was he connected to the video games? (Virtually True)
Answer:
The narrator read about Sebastian Shultz in a newspaper article, which stated that Sebastian had come out of a coma after a road accident. He realised they had connected through the virtual reality games when he saw the name ‘Sebastian Shultz’ as a character in all the games he had played.

(iii) Bring out the significance of the Grandfather’s Bureau in ‘The Dear Departed’.

The grandfather’s bureau is an important tool used by the playwright to introduce the theme of selfishness in the play. The fight over its ownership reveals the rivalry between the two sisters. Mrs Slater wanted the bureau as she liked it. She knew that, if her sister became aware of this fact, then she would fight over it viciously. So, she decided to keep the bureau and call it her own.
