Class 5 Maths Notes Chapter 5 – Class 5 Far and Near Notes

Length is a term used to describe how long, tall, or wide something is. When we say something is long, we are referring to its length. Length can be measured using various standard units, depending on how big or small the object is. To measure different lengths, we commonly use millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), and metres (m). For very long distances, kilometres (km) are also used.

→ A scale or ruler is often used to measure or compare lengths accurately.

→ Millimetre (mm), centimetre (cm), metre (m), and kilometre (km) are standard units used to measure length.

→ Millimetre (mm) is the smallest unit among the four, used for measuring very small lengths (like the thickness of a coin).

→ Centimetre (cm) is used for measuring small to medium lengths (like the length of a pencil).

→ Metre (m) is used for longer measurements (like the height of a door or a room).

→ For even greater distances, kilometres (km) are used (like the distance between two cities).

→ Relation between three standard units are as follow:

  • 1 cm = 10 mm
  • 100 cm = 1 m

→ 1 km = 1000 m or 1000 m = 1 km

→ When we add or subtract lengths, we either:

→ Convert all measures to the same units, or

→ Add or subtract km with kim, m with m and cm with cm.

→ Double number lines representing lengths can help in unit conversions and comparing lengths.

→ Measuring Length Measuring length is determining the distance between two points or the size of an object from end to end.

Units of Measurement

→ Millimetre (mm) Used for very small lengths. (e.g. thickness of a seed).

→ Centimetre (cm) Used for small lengths (e.g. length of a pencil)
1 cm = 10 mm

→ Metre (m) Used for medium length (e.g. height of statue).
1 m = 100 cm

→ Kilometre (km) Used for long distances (e.g. distance between two cities).
1 km=1000 m

Conversion of Units

→ Convert larger units to smaller units by multiplying.
e.g. (i) 2 km=2 × 1000=2000 m
[∵ 1 km=1000 m]
[∵ 1 cm=10 mm]

(ii) 40 cm=40 × 10=400 mm

→ Convert smaller units to larger units by dividing.
e.g. (i) 500 cm = \(\frac{500}{100}\) = 5 m
[∵ 1 cm = \(\frac{1}{100}\) m]

(ii) 4000 m = \(\frac{4000}{1000}\) = 4 km
[∵ 1 m = \(\frac{1}{1000}\) km]

Operations with Lengths

→ Addition/Subtraction

→ To add or subtract lengths in different units, the essential first step is to convert all measurements to the same unit, such as centimetres or metres.
Example : Add 3 km 450 m and 4 km 650 m.
Solution:
We have, 3 km 450 m = 3 × 1000 m + 450 m [∵ 1 km = 1000 m]
= 3000 m + 450 m = 3450 m
and 4 km 650 m = 4 × 1000 m + 650 m = 4000 m + 650 m = 4650 m
So, 3 km 450 m + 4 km 650 m = 3450 m + 4650 m = 8100 m = 8000 m + 100 m
= \(\frac{8000}{1000}\) km+100 m
= 8 km 100 m [∵ 1 m = \(\frac{1}{1000}\) km]
