Addition and subtraction help us in solving real-life problems like managing money, measuring distances, and counting large items. Palindromic numbers are symmetrical and fun to explore in patterns and puzzles. Even and odd numbers alternate in counting and form the foundation of number patterns.
→ Addition and subtraction are basic arithmetic operations used to find totals or differences between numbers.
→ When adding or subtracting large numbers, we align the digits according to their place values—ones, tens, hundreds, and so on.
→ We always arrange numbers place by place when adding or subtracting.
→ We always start adding or subtracting from the rightmost digit (one’s place) and move left.
→ If the sum in any column is more than 9 during addition, we carry over the extra value to the next column.
→ In subtraction, if a digit in the top number is smaller than the one below, we borrow from the next higher place.
→ It is important to write the numbers in columns to avoid mistakes and keep the digits in the correct places.
→ Addition helps us combine quantities, while subtraction helps us find how much more or less one number is compared to another.
→ We can check our subtraction answer by adding the difference to the smaller number; it should give the larger number.
→ Mastering the addition and subtraction of large numbers builds a strong foundation for solving real- life problems involving money, distance, and population.

→ A number is called palindromic if it reads the same forward and backwards.
→ Palindromes can have any number of digits, like 121, 1331, or 44,344.
→ We can tell if a number is even or odd just by looking at its last digit.
→ If a number ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, it’s even.
→ If it ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, it’s odd.
→ Even numbers can be divided into two equal parts; odd numbers cannot.
→ The sum of:
- Even + Even = Even
- Odd + Odd = Even
- Even + Odd = Odd
→ Addition of Numbers
First, write the numbers in columns according to place values. Then add the digits column wise starting from the right (ones place).
Also, carry over the next column if the sum is 10 or more.
e.g. 3,456+789=4,245

→ Subtraction of Numbers
First, write the numbers in columns according to place values. Then, subtract the digits column wise starting from the right. Also, borrow from the next column if the upper digit is smaller than the lower digit.
e.g. 84,175-3,639=80,536

→ Even and Odd Numbers
- The numbers whose units place digit is 0,2,4,6 or 8 are called as even numbers. e.g. 24,28,2,002,526 etc.
- The numbers whose units place digit is 1,3,5,7 or 9 are called as odd numbers. e.g. 35,37,2,001,525 etc.
→ Note
- Even + Even = Even
- Odd + Odd = Odd
- Odd + Even = Odd
- Even – Even = Even
- Odd – Odd = Even
- Odd – Even = Odd
→ Consecutive Numbers
- The numbers that follow one another in order without skipping any number are called consecutive numbers.
e.g. 1,2,3,4,5 are consecutive numbers. - The sum of two consecutive numbers is always odd.
- The sum of three consecutive numbers is odd and even, if the middle number is odd and even, respectively.
- The sum of four consecutive numbers is always even.
- The difference between two successive sums for n-consecutive numbers is n, where n=1,2,3,4, ……..

→ Palindrome Numbers
The numbers that read the same, when read from left to right or from right to left are called palindrome numbers.
e.g. 22,363,404,8558 etc.
